About
Free Fiction Online is run by Naomi Kramer, writer of Nomesque Fiction and the person behind the @onlinefiction twitter account.
The purpose of @onlinefiction – and this associated blog – is to promote free, online fiction.
What Fiction can be Promoted?
Any genre and style of fiction is eligible for promotion. There are, however, a few rules:
- The fiction must be free to read, no donations required
- If the vast majority of work advertised on the site is not free of charge, with only a couple of chapters or short stories available to read for free, they’ll most likely not be included.
- Must be available in English, with a link provided to the english translation if the main site is in another language
- The site must be simple enough to navigate – complex menus or confusing links may make a site ineligible
- The story – or stories – must be easily readable. This means a decent level of English spelling and grammar
- A direct link to the site or ebook must be available. I know this makes statistic-tracking more difficult for you, but I do run all my links through bit.ly, and I can provide you with a stats link via bit.ly if you’d like to keep an eye on how many click-throughs I’m generating for you. But please do NOT expect me to give readers a ‘follow this link and jump through this hoop’ type of thing. It will NOT happen.
- Rudeness, abuse or demands made to the administrator – me! – may result in your site being removed from promotional lists
- This service is provided gratis, for the good of all – I’m happy to discuss any decisions I make to exclude certain content, but inclusion is a privilege, not a right.
PS. My apologies if the above list is sounding a little (or a lot) defensive or grumpy. If you’re worried about irritating me, chances are, you won’t. 99% of the writers who’ve asked me to include their listings are wonderfully polite. A couple of the grumpier-sounding list items were inspired by the other 1%.
Re-submitting Links
I am, sadly, rather disorganised when it comes to getting listings into my regular twitter posts, and it’s possible that links have slipped through the cracks and I’ve completely missed them. If you’ve sent me a link and I haven’t started promoting it AND haven’t gotten back to you with an explanation, chances are that’s what has happened. Please resubmit it. I’m sorry about the ditziness, but I doing my damnedest to keep it to a minimum.
Repayment
First, let me make one thing clear. I do like to help others out. But I’m not doing this promotion thing purely out of the goodness of my heart. I’m doing it because I realised something a couple of months ago – promoting a whole lot of fiction, and a whole lot of writers, is going to help the promotion of my fiction more than if I just sent out links to my own fiction and nothing else.
That said… a number of people have asked me what they can do to repay me for helping them out. So, I’ve come up with something…
I’ve just released my first ebook, a novelette called DEAD(ish), on Smashwords. It’s free to download, in a number of different formats – PDF, EPUB, MOBI, etc. If you appreciate the promotions I’m doing with @onlinefiction, and you’d like to help me out in return, I’d love for you to promote the hell out of DEAD(ish). Via twitter, your own website or blog, whatever. Here’s some sample code, if you want to use it:
<p style=”text-align:center;”><strong>FREE Ebook!</strong></p><p style=”text-align:center;”><a href=”http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/2679″><img src=”http://freefictiononline.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/deadish_cover6_sm.png” width=”100px” /><br>DEAD(ish)<br>Naomi Kramer</a></p>
You won’t get promoted differently based on whether you do or don’t help promote DEAD(ish). Totally voluntary. But I will love you just that little bit more
